A Letter From Uncle Jer

Dear Friends and Customers,

  I originally made cookies for the cafe my wife and I owned and operated in Sacramento.  Uncle Jer’s Cookies was started around 1983.   My sister, Patti Van Der Kamp, was PTA President of Florin Elementary School at the time.  She called and asked if we could bake the same cookies for the PTA to sell as a fundraiser.  They started selling weekly, and pretty soon other schools heard about Florin’s success and started calling.
My nephews were helping to perfect the recipe by being guinea pigs.  When discussing the name of the cookies the nephews said in unison, “they’re Uncle Jer’s Cookies!”  I was bored working in our cafe, so I went out to do advertising for Uncle Jer’s Cookies, and the rest, as they say, is history. 
  Our nephews worked on and off for Uncle Jer’s as teenagers and now have their own children and careers.  Florin Elementary is still selling our cookies!  They do several school wide sales a year.  Patti Van Der Kamp is now a fifth grade teacher at Anna Kirchgater Elementary in the Elk Grove Unified school district were the 5th grade class rules in cookie sales.
My company has expanded twice since our conception, taking a space in the same industrial complex as our cafe, and then building a state of the art facility in our own building.  We currently have downsized and have a bakery making our great recipes exclusively for Uncle Jer's Cookies.
  Many students have asked how we arrive at the price of the cookies.  We add the costs of labor, ingredients and overhead (office expense, rent, vehicles, insurance, advertising, etc.) and a small margin of profit.  I feel we must be competitive with the candy fundraisers, so we try to keep the price of our cookies as low as possible.  We always want to please our customers with the best products ever for the best price!
